Laughing at Absurdity

Don’t you just love a fresh Monday? Or maybe it’s just me.

If it’s not your favorite day of the week, let me soften the blow by opening up today’s Mind Shift Monday with a joke…

What do you call someone who loves Mondays? (Besides an Omar)

Retired! Ba-dum-ch

Don’t worry, I won’t be announcing my comedy tour anytime soon, even though I’m obviously hilarious.

But today, I want to talk about the power of humor and how laughter, especially when things are going absurdly wrong, can completely change how you experience life.

Has life ever thrown you too many curveballs at once? So many, one after another, that you have to ask yourself, “What in the heck is going on?” Why is life trying to dogpile you with more than you can handle?

There’s a very interesting philosophy around moments like these called absurdism

As a formal philosophy, absurdism is largely credited to Albert Camus, a French philosopher, author, and journalist in the mid-20th century.

At its core, absurdism is the idea that life doesn’t always make sense. No matter how much we search for meaning in a situation, there will still be times when things feel random, chaotic, or just… absurd. And that’s alright!

Absurdism reminds us that, while we may not always control what happens, we can control how we respond and how we find our clarity and purpose from the randomness of it all.

Which brings me full circle back to one of the best ways to deal with life’s absurdities- laughter!

Now, I’m not talking about laughing like a lunatic in front of everyone when your computer crashes during your big presentation. That might earn you a one-way ticket to a padded room.

What I’m talking about is shifting your perspective to find humor in what could otherwise be seen as a disaster or a “why is this happening to me?” kind of situation.

7 Science-Backed Reasons to Laugh at Life

Finding the humorous side of things when you’re feeling anything but happy isn’t usually your first instinct. But if you’re aware of the physical effects and mental benefits humor and laughter bring, you might just be more inclined to give it a try.

  1. Better Process of Fear and Uncertainty
Humor is a way of dealing with things that make you uncomfortable, like failure or chaos. Sigmund Freud believed humor was the highest form of defense mechanism because it allows you to face reality without being overwhelmed by it. Laughing at life’s uncertainties allows you to take them less personally, reframing challenges as funny, manageable quirks rather than life-altering threats.

  2. Strengthens Your Resilience
People who regularly find humor in life’s challenges are often able to bounce back easier than people who take life too seriously. Studies by the American Psychological Association show that humor boosts resilience, as it reframes problems as temporary and manageable. This means that laughing through life’s absurdities isn’t just fun, it’s a proven way to build emotional endurance so you can recover faster and keep going.

  3. Expands Your Perspective
Humor helps you see things differently and improves your cognitive flexibility, which is the ability to view situations from multiple angles. A study in Psychological Science found that humor increases creative thinking, helping you solve problems more effectively. When things aren’t going your way, humor gives you a much-needed mental shift, turning a seemingly impossible problem into something more manageable.

  4. Boosts Your Pain Tolerance
Ever laughed so hard it felt like it took the edge off a rough day? Studies from Oxford University show that laughter can increase both physical and mental pain tolerance by up to 10%, thanks to the release of endorphins. These feel-good chemicals act as natural painkillers, providing comfort and even improving mood, so a hearty laugh really can be the best medicine when life gets tough.

  5. Creates Social Connection
Laughter has a bonding effect. It releases oxytocin, known as the love hormone, which helps you connect with others. According to research by psychologist Robert Provine, shared laughter builds trust and closeness, which is why you may feel more supported after laughing with friends. Laughing through the hard times doesn’t just make you feel better, it can strengthen your social network and help make challenging times easier to handle.

  6. Good for Your Physical Health
Laughter benefits your health in a lot of surprising ways. It reduces blood pressure, improves circulation, and even boosts your immune system. Research from the University of Maryland found that laughter can even improve vascular function, making it great for heart health and reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Regular laughter also helps relax muscles and relieve tension, promoting overall physical wellness. A laugh a day keeps the doctor away!

  7. Reduces Stress and Boosts Mood
This seems pretty obvious that laughing will improve your mood, but do you know the science of it? When you laugh, your body releases endorphins which lower cortisol, the stress hormone. Research from Stanford University shows that laughter has an immediate calming effect on the nervous system, giving you an emotional reset when your body is under stress.

As you can see, laughter is more than just a reaction. It’s a valuable tool to deal with the ups and downs of life. And as you know, there will always be ups and downs, chaos, and uncertainty, no matter how hard you try to plan.

So why not start shifting your perspective now, so that the next time life comes crashing down, you’re ready to take on the challenge with a healthy dose of humor?

Action Step

Let’s put the power of humor into practice. This week, challenge yourself to find humor in unexpected moments that you would normally let overwhelm you. Here’s how you can start shifting your mindset.

  1. Catch Yourself in Serious Mode
When you find yourself getting stressed, frustrated, or overly serious, pause and take a deep breath. Ask yourself, “If this were a scene in a sitcom, what would be funny about it?” By picturing the moment through a humorous lens, you can create some mental distance and see the situation differently. This small shift can prevent stress and frustration from taking over.

  2. Reframe Annoyances as Funny Challenges
Each time something minor doesn’t go as planned, like a traffic jam, spilled coffee, or a tech glitch, reframe it as a quirky test of patience rather than a disruption. Tell yourself, “This could make a great story,” or find something amusing in it. When you view setbacks as funny challenges, it softens their impact and helps you build resilience through a lighthearted mindset.

  3. Share the Humor
When you find humor in a situation that might otherwise be overwhelming, share the story with someone you trust. Laughing together amplifies the benefits of using humor to deal with challenges, making it easier to shift your view of stressful situations. See how far you can go in changing how you respond.

When life throws those unexpected twists your way, remember that sometimes the best response is to laugh. As Jay Leno says… “You can’t be mad at something that makes you laugh—it’s as simple as that.”

Find the funny in life this week. And if you find yourself with a story that’s too ridiculous to keep to yourself, you know where to find me!
