It’s Monday—the gateway to a brand new week. As you continue to better yourself so you can live your most amazing life, you’ll have some exciting doors open for you, while others will close. It’s how life goes.
And while I hope every door is open to you, today I want to talk to you about what to do when it feels like the Universe has just slammed a door in your face.
Maybe it’s a job opportunity, a relationship, or a dream you’ve been clinging to. You’ve poured your heart into something, only to feel like the Universe is holding up a giant “Not going to happen!” sign.
It sucks. I know because I’ve been there.
But what if the Universe saying no isn’t a punishment? What if it’s a redirection?
Letting go of something you desperately want can feel like admitting defeat, but it’s not. When you learn to release what’s no longer meant for you, those closed doors can become opportunities to pivot toward something even better.
As you know though, letting go isn’t so easy. It’s actually one of the hardest things we do as humans. But it’s also one of the most freeing.
Why Letting Go Feels So Hard
Letting go isn’t as easy as just walking away from something and putting it out of your mind. It’s about untying the emotional knots you’ve tied around what you thought you needed to feel whole.
Here’s why it’s tough:
Your brain craves certainty: Your brain is wired to seek patterns and predictability. When something you want doesn’t happen, it disrupts your sense of control, which causes your brain to panic.
You attach your identity to outcomes: Have you ever thought, “If I don’t get this, who am I without it?” It’s easy to attach external achievements or relationships to your self-worth.
Fear of the unknown: Letting go means stepping into uncertainty. And let’s face it, that can feel scary.
But what you need to realize is that holding on too tightly to what’s not meant for you only creates resistance and can keep you stuck where you are.
By having the courage to let go and trust the Universe has something better in store for you, you can live more freely and without the fear of losing something that was never yours in the first place.
Here are five ways you can start learning the art of letting go…
- Reframe the “No” as a Redirection
Instead of seeing the Universe’s no as rejection, look at it as a nudge into a direction that will be better suited for you. What if the door closing is actually protecting you from something that isn’t aligned with your true, authentic purpose? For example, not landing that dream job might feel devastating in the moment, but it could be making room for an even better opportunity, one you wouldn’t have been open to if you had taken the path you thought you wanted. - Identify What You’re Really Holding Onto
Sometimes, it’s not the thing itself that you want but what it represents. Are you holding onto a relationship because it feels safe, even if it’s unfulfilling or makes you unhappy? Or maybe you’re chasing a goal because you think it will validate you. Be honest with yourself about the reasons for your attachment. - Detach from the Outcome
You can work hard for something, want it deeply, and still let go of the need to control the outcome. Detachment doesn’t mean you stop caring or trying. It means you stop letting the outcome define your happiness. Focus on the process, not the prize. What can you learn or enjoy along the way, even if the result isn’t what you hoped for? - Create Space for the New
Don’t view letting go as losing something. Try to see it as you’re about to gain something. Imagine you’re holding onto a handful of sand, squeezing it so tightly that nothing new can fit in your hand. When you let go, you create space for new experiences, relationships, and opportunities to flow into your life. - Practice Trusting the Bigger Picture
Letting go requires courage, trust, and faith. Have faith that the Universe knows what it’s doing, even when you don’t. Think back to a time when something didn’t work out and, in hindsight, you were grateful it didn’t. Or was there a time in your life when something was so stressful and hard to live through but it turned out to be one of the best things that could have happened to you? Trust that the same principle applies the next time you feel a door shut.
Action Step
This week, I’d like you to focus on letting go of one thing that’s creating resistance in your life. The goal here is to remove the resistance so you can create the space you need to attract more positive things in your life.
- Identify What You’re Clinging To
What are you having a hard time letting go of? Is it a job, a relationship, or a specific outcome? Write it down in your journal. Get clear about what’s taking up space in your mind. - Write Down What You’re Afraid Of
What are you afraid will happen if things don’t go as planned? Naming your fears will help take away their power over you. Are you scared of failing? Of being judged? Of feeling lost or out of control? Acknowledge these fears without judgment. - Release It with Action
Instead of holding onto what’s not serving you, take a small, meaningful step toward releasing it. If you’re clinging to a job that feels misaligned, update your resume or explore opportunities that excite and inspire you. If it’s a relationship, set a boundary or reach out to someone who uplifts you. Action helps shift your focus from what you’re losing to what you’re gaining.
Learning to let go when a door is shut isn’t a one-and-done deal. It’s a practice, something you’ll return to again and again. But by shifting your mindset about what it means when a door shuts, you’ll find yourself becoming more resilient, more grounded, and ultimately, much happier.
And remember, just because the Universe says no, it doesn’t make you any less worthy. That “no” might end up being one of the best things to happen to you
Trust the Universe when it closes and opens doors for you, but more importantly, trust yourself that when something is meant for you, you’ll be ready and open to seize it.
Have an amazing week!
