Happy Monday! And congrats on making it through another Black Friday!
Every year the world goes a little nuts for a week. Our inboxes get pummeled with offers and we all start buying stuff we don’t need strictly out of fear of missing out on a deal.
“But I saved 40%!”- Yeah, but you could have saved 100% because you didn’t really need that doodad you bought three of.
I’m just as guilty as you, so no judgment on my end. However, on the backside of Black Friday, there’s a lesser-known day that I wholeheartedly stand behind.
And I couldn’t wait to talk to you about it in today’s Mind Shift Monday! But have you ever thought something to yourself that was so silly you were thankful that you didn’t say it out loud?
Well, I’m going to say it out loud because I trust you won’t tell anyone.
When I was planning today’s email I was checking my calendar to see if Giving Tuesday would fall on a Monday this year. Yeah, you read that right. *blush*
I’m going to blame that embarrassing brain hiccup on me constantly crossing time zones. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it. Lol
As it turns out, Giving Tuesday is always on (you guessed it) a Tuesday. Which makes tomorrow Giving Tuesday, the more enlightened cousin of Black Friday.
Black-Fri and Cyber-Mon are all about getting. But Giving Tuesday is about something much more meaningful.
Giving Tuesday started as a simple idea: a global day dedicated to giving back. It began in 2012 as a way to counterbalance the consumer frenzy, encouraging people to focus on generosity instead of consumption.
Now, it’s a movement celebrated worldwide. People donate to causes they care about, volunteer their time, or just go out of their way to spread kindness in their communities.
It’s a beautiful thing.
But beyond having a positive impact on the world, giving also has a remarkable effect on you.
Giving activates powerful mechanisms in your brain that boost your happiness, health, and overall well-being.
Let me break it down for you…
(Knock knock. Who’s there? Oh—it’s science!)
Why Giving is the Happiness Boost You Can’t Buy
Scientists have discovered that the act of giving activates parts of your brain linked to pleasure, connection, and even survival. It’s as if your brain knows that giving isn’t just nice—it’s a necessity.
Generosity changes your brain chemistry, strengthens your emotional resilience, and connects you to something bigger than yourself. In giving, you don’t just help others, you uncover the best parts of yourself.
Here are five ways giving rewires your brain and transforms you.
- It Unlocks Your Brain’s Pleasure Circuit
Think of the rush you get from scoring a deal or eating a slice of your favorite pizza. According to a study by the National Institutes of Health, giving hits those same dopamine-rich parts of your brain. Researchers found that acts of generosity activate the brain’s reward system and the effects of giving last longer than those of material pleasure. Dopamine isn’t as fleeting when tied to meaningful actions, making it a natural mood booster that keeps on… giving.
- It Creates a Healthy “Helper’s High”
Move over, adrenaline—“helper’s high” is the ultimate feel-good rush. When you give, your brain releases a surge of oxytocin and endorphins, creating a natural state of euphoria. According to Harvard researchers, this chemical cocktail doesn’t just boost your mood, it can lower blood pressure, reduce stress, and even strengthen your immune system. In other words, generosity isn’t just good for the soul, it’s good for your body too.
- It Builds an Abundance Mindset
When you give, you’re signaling to your brain, “I have more than enough to share.” This shift from scarcity to abundance rewires your thinking in powerful ways. Research published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that people who give generously feel wealthier in every sense—emotionally, mentally, and even financially. Generosity becomes a reminder of your resourcefulness and capability.
- It Inspires a Kindness Chain Reaction
Generosity doesn’t stop with you. It’s incredibly contagious. A study in Nature Communications found that a single act of kindness inspires at least three more, creating a ripple effect that can spread far beyond your reach. Imagine you pay for someone’s coffee in the drive-thru. They smile, their mood lifts, and later that day, they’re inspired to help someone else. Your one small gesture created a wave of kindness, touching lives you’ll never even know. That’s so powerful
- It Deepens Your Connections
Generosity doesn’t just impact those on the receiving end. It transforms you on a deeper level. Acts of giving light up the brain’s empathy network, strengthening your ability to understand and connect with others. At the same time, generosity aligns your actions with your core values, bringing a sense of purpose to your life. It’s a moment of reflection that reminds you of what truly matters, creating a deeper connection with your authentic self.
The act of giving is something that goes well beyond the superficial dopamine hits of consumerism, materialism, or instant gratification. It creates a lasting sense of purpose, connection, and fulfillment that money simply can’t buy.
And giving doesn’t have to be monetary. It can be as simple as taking time out of your day to do something nice for a family member or co-worker.
Giving with your attention is just as valuable as giving from your wallet.
So, tomorrow is Giving Tuesday. If you’d like to give to your favorite charity, fantastic! But it’s just as powerful to start each day this week with kindness, generosity, and the intention to make someone’s day better.
By doing so, you’ll set off a chain of meaningful moments that extend far beyond your initial gesture.
Action Step
This week, let’s embrace the spirit of giving in a way that feels authentic to you. Start small and focus on one meaningful action at a time.
- Reflect on Your Values: Take five minutes to think about what generosity means to you. Is it about sharing your time, offering kindness, or showing gratitude? Write down one way you’d like to give more intentionally this week.
- Plan Your Action: Think about the opportunities where you can put your reflections into action. It could be as simple as genuinely thanking the people you like working with, calling old friends and family you haven’t made time for, or helping an elderly neighbor run errands. Make your actions specific and commit to doing it every day this week.
- Express Written Gratitude: I love this one. When was the last time you received something in the mail that wasn’t a bill? This week, write a heartfelt, physical letter to someone who deserves more gratitude than you’ve shown. Let them know how much they mean to you and how they’ve positively impacted your life. Either give them the letter or pop it in the mail. Yes, actually attach a stamp and post it. That letter is going to mean more than you know.
I hope you have an incredible week. I can’t wait to hear how your small acts of giving brought happiness and meaningful changes in the lives of others.
Every act of kindness creates ripples that spread further than you’ll ever be aware of. You are a powerful force for good and positive change.
Let’s go big this week. I’m in this with you. We’re not just going to create ripples…
Together, we’re going to create waves!
